VTnet 2011
VTnet is a software package written at Virginia Tech and distributed on CD-ROM and online (see below). VTnet automatically runs and performs
the following functions for you:
- Helps obtain Internet access by configuring your Ethernet or modem.
- Helps secure your computer from computer hacks and viruses.
- Helps in configuring your e-mail client to use Virginia Tech.
- Provides a collection of software packages for current Virginia Tech students or for University owned computers.
- Provides educational information on "best practices" for your computer at Virginia Tech.
VTnet does the following things on a PC:
- Adds a root certificate to Internet Explorer to set Virginia Tech as a trusted site.
- Turns on the Windows 7/Vista/XP Firewall or a IPSEC Firewall for Windows 2000, whenever you run the VTnet CD.
- Installs a group of VBScript utility tools in a folder on your c: drive. For use if you have problems later.
- Adds a group of bad web address to the Internet Explorer "restricted sites" and adds "learn.vt.edu" / "scholar.vt.edu"
to the Internet Explorer "trusted sites".
- Turns on the automatic Windows Update to run every night at 12:00 AM.
- Checks for AntiVirus software and tries to install Symantec Endpoint Protection.
- Tries to install Microsoft's Windows Defender software on Windows 7/Vista/XP.
- Tries to define the wireless network(VT_WLAN) so that your computer can use the wireless network on-campus. You must

- Tries to define the wireless network(VT-Wireless) so that your computer can use the wireless network on-campus. You must

You must
also get a NetCert certificate, see: http://www.cns.vt.edu/data_services.html
- Scans to determine if the network connection is working and records this information in the registry keys.
- Sets your network connect to use DHCP, saves the current IP address if currently configured to use a static address in the registry keys.
- Tries to assist you in creating backup data of your computer.
- Creates two desktop icons, MY VT and Computer Security.

VTnet does the following things on a Mac:
If OS version is greater than 10.5
- VTnet Installs VT Root Cert in keychain(Login).
- Turns on firewall.
- Sets "software updates" to run.
- Enables both wired and wireless cards.
- Add VT_Wlan to the known wireless configurations.
- Sets screensaver at 15 minutes requires password.

- Adds a desktop icon for MyVT.
- Tries to install Norton Antivirus (11.0.3) software.

- Provides links to documentation on Boot Camp (bootcamp), Parallels and VMWare Fusion. To assist you with installing a Windows OS on your Mac.
The VTnet CD also contains the following additional items:

Online versions:
Both the PC and Mac versions can be obtain online. The online versions do not contain any licensed software.
Save the PC version to your desktop and then double-click the vtnet.exe
to begin execution. Save the Mac version to your computer unzip if needed and then click the VTnet-Mac
to begin execution.
